A little coffee history for you customized coffee mug lovers...It was in the ninth century that Ethiopians first began to brew and consume coffee, though when the first coffee mug came into existence seems to have been lost in the murky fog of history. We do know that stone age man carved drinking vessels from whale bone, and that the first coffee house, a placed called Kiva Han, appeared in Constantinople (now Istanbul) in 1745. Back then you drank your cup of Joe from a carved wooden “coffee mug”. A German physician mentions coffee served in cups in 1583 when he wrote of his trip to Asia: “Its consumers take it in the morning, quite frankly, in a porcelain cup that is passed around and from which each one drinks a cupful.” Little did that German physician realize what was in store for the world: Coffee now is second only to oil as a commodity and has spawned industries from world wide coffee house chains to online custom photo imprinted coffee mugs! |
