Stock Photography
Stock photography refers to the licensing of existing images for
advertising, editorial, corporate and personal use. Advantages of
licensing stock images over having the images shot include knowing what
you are getting, cost effectiveness, and a huge time savings. There are a number of different categories of stock photography
including: Rights Managed, Rights Ready, Royalty Free, Micro Stock, and
Subscription Stock. With Rights Managed stock every use is recorded and
licensees have the ability to secure exclusivity if they wish. Prices
vary depending on the uses including time, size, territory, industry and
so forth. One can expect to pay a higher price for say, exclusive
one-year national use on billboards than a one-time use in a local
newspaper. With Rights Ready licensing the client pays for a package of
rights and can use the images for ten years. Royalty Free images can be
licensed for a fee usually based on the size of the file, and generally
has the right to use the image indefinitely and for a wide variety of
purposes. Micro Stock, a relative newcomer to the stock industry, refers
to collections that are primarily supplied by amateurs and licensed
similarly to Royalty Free but at much lower prices. With subscription
stock an annual or bi-annual fee earns the licensee the right to
download a given number of images over a specified period of time…again
with rights based on the Royalty Fee structures. Stock images can be licensed through individual photographers and/or
agencies…the largest of which are Getty Images and Corbis. Getty is
owned by the Getty family trust while Corbis is owned by Bill Gates. Big
business indeed! Getty Images and Corbis are both large general
agencies…but there are numerous smaller more specialized ones. Blend
Images is such an agency. Co-founded by 23 highly accomplished stock
photographers, Blend focuses on the positive imagery of ethnic lifestyle
and business. Another specialty agency is Kimball Stock which has two
specialties; exotic cars and animal photography. John’s stock images are handled by Blend Images, Getty Images,
Corbis, and Kimball stock. Each image on this site is labeled with the
name of the agency handling the licensing of that image. Gift

talented emerging Photoshop artist and photographer. John makes his images available to a variety of charitable causes for
animal rescue groups both in the U. S. and abroad. He donates a
percentage of his income from the elephant series to the Elephant rescue
