Though the lighthouse in this pic has been Photoshopped into a new environment, there is no getting around the inherent beauty in this stately structure. Pigeon Point lighthouse is a 115 foot tall lighthouse built in 1872, and is the tallest of all California lighthouses. It has a five-wick lard oil lamp with a Fresnel lens comprised of over 1000 prisms. The lens is 16 feet tall and six feet in diameter. The lens weighs a whopping 8,000 pounds and was first put into service on November 15th, 1872 at sunset. The lantern room was constructed in New York and shipped around the Horn. The original Fresnel lens has been retired its duties now being performed by a 24 inch Aero Beacon. The lighthouse is part of a state Historic park and houses a youth hostel in the former keepers housing, complete with a hot tub that was described by Budget Travel Magazine as "The most spectacular hot tub on earth".

Pigeon Point lighthouse is one of the famous USA lighthouses and also one of the most beautiful. It sits on a point of land jutting out of the rugged Northern California coastline a short drive from the famous Big Sur region of the state. When you need a picture of a lighthouse, Pigeon Point is well worth the trip. Tall and majestic, it rises over the coast line, a giant sentinel ready to serve and protect. The area is also well known for its whale watching, tidepools, and 1,000 year old redwood forests nearby. At the Pescadero Marsh there is feeding and nesting for more than 150 species of birds (of course, dogs are prohibited at all times). Ano Nuevo State Natural Reserve is also the breeding site for northern elephant seals. At lot to see and do at the famous Pigeon Point lighthouse!
