A Lion, The King of Beasts, Roars Out His Mastery of His Kingdom.This particular lion is named Truman. When photographing a lion in my studio for stock images, we had an interesting set of rules we had to follow. The animal trainer told us not to "separate from the pack", don't crouch down, don't turn your back to him, and if there was anything we didn't want marked we should cover it because he can "spray" up to fifteen feet. Nice.

Interesting Lion Facts

Often used on family crests, lions used to be found from Greece, to the Middle East and India as well as Africa. The lion, unlike most cats, lives life as part of a social system, a pride, usual including a dozen or more individual cats with five to ten females, their young, and two or three males. Lions spend up to 20 hours a day sleeping and napping. Their roars can be heard up to five miles distant. They hunt together and usually have a success rate of about fifty percent. They eat everything from mice to young elephants and often enjoy scavenged meals. They can go up to five days without taking a drink of water! Lions, Panthera leo, stand at maturity about 48 inches high, weigh 500 pounds, and only have one predator...man. Male lions are extremely territorial and roam over a large territory up to about 100 square miles.
