Funny and scary picture of a black cat arching his back, fur standing on end, and hissing in front of a full moon.

In this funny, but scary, cat picture, a black kitty arches his back making his fur stand up, and hisses while standing on a fence rail in front of a full moon at night. This is a classic black cat photo and makes for a great Halloween image. It isn't easy to get funny cat picturess like this one!

How to take Funny Kitten Photos

In explaining how to take funny kitten photos I would have to say that the first thing that comes to mind is control. Kittens, any cats for that matter, are very difficult to control. They almost have a sixth sense about what you want...and will do anything to avoid it! So my first rule is to control what you can. Before shooting make sure you are familiar with your camera, that you already know what your exposure should be, and if possible have an enclosure to keep your pets contained in a small area so that focusing will be easier and your exposure will not vary. I also think it adds interest to get down on their level. If you get their eyes sharply focused pretty much anything else out-of-focus can be forgiven. The most important thing to remember when photographing cat, kittens or pretty much any pet, is patience! Plan on taking your time and enjoying the experience...then you won't every come away totally empty handed!

Funny Cat Photos and Photoshop

To create this and other funny cat photos I rely on Photoshop for help. In this circumstance a neighbor brought her young kittens over to show me. I grabbed my camera, got down on the floor and just started shooting. When someone's dog wandered in the kitten arched his back and started hissing. I couldn't believe my luck! I managed to get one sharp image of the kitten, back arched and fur standing on end, against a white wall in my studio office. I knew I had to make an image with that shot but knew that the kitten's fur was too fine to strip out. I quickly realized that if I put the kitten against a white background, then I wouldn't have to strip it's fur out. A moon would be perfect! I found a full moon in my files as well as a random shot of a fence. I isolated the top rail of the fence and pasted it in front of the moon. I used the Photoshop lens blur filter to throw the moon out-of-focus as if the kitten were being photographed with a telephoto lens which would naturally have a very shallow depth-of-field. Then I pasted the cat in place and used a layer mask to "paint away" the portions of that image that I did not want. I used a curves adjustment layer to match the remaining white of the kitten image with that of the moon behind. I also found a different shot of the kitten's head that had a slightly better angle and used it to replace the kitten's head in the original image. I used the same layer mask and adjustment layer procedure to blend the new head into the composite. Presto! A scary, and funny, Halloween photograph of a black cat in front of a full moon.
