We are all familiar with the concept of the family tree in which photos of relatives are arranged on the branches of a tree. In this concept stock photo illustrating social media and networking, a tree is covered in photos of various individuals representing a broad cross section of our society. There are photographs of people representing all age groups, from seniors to babies, all ethnicities, and both genders.

A Tree Of Social Media And Networking

In the effort to create an image that conveys the concepts of social media and networking in the Internet age, I created a new version of the old iconic family tree, but this time with a wide range of individuals. All of these people are model released for this image. This picture addresses the idea that the whole world is becoming family, and many of us have hundreds of friends that we have never met in person.

Social Media And The New Tribes

One of the new social media and networking concepts is that of forming "tribes" and "fans". As businesses search for ways to reach out to prospective clients and active users, they increasingly are turning to social media. But how do we describe such activities in photographs? How do we show Internet "tribes" and facebook "fans"? It is the challenge and responsibility for photographers to dig into their creative resources and come up with new visuals for adequately communicating about modern concepts.
