Ancient Jewish Village of Jajjarah In Yemen

The ancient Jewish village of Hajjarah though the Jewish population is long gone. The village "tower home" of stone and rammed earth construction are in various stages of disrepair, but are still inhabited by Yemeni people. The geographical location subjects the village to dailey visits of fog, usually in the afternoon.

Jambiyas, Donkeys And Staying In Shape

It was in this village that I purchased a traditional Yemeni dagger called a Jambiya. I bought it right off a local merchant, belt and all. On the positive side at least I know it is an authentic one and not made for a tourist...though at $40.00 it wasn't particularly cheap! Living in this village is one way to stay in shape. Your either climbing up or climbing down the entire time and the roads within the village are not driveable...though donkeys are employed for transportation of some goods.

Rooftop Photography

This image was photographed from the roof top of a local house. We charmed our way in. The house was about five floors high so we climbed a central stone circular stairway. It was dark and the steps were of random heights which made both the ascent and the descent somewhat of an adventure. I felt lucky I made up and down without serious injury!
