Lions As Symbol

Lions are symbolic of courage, boldness, power and strength, and as such make great business metaphors. In this lion business stock photo a businessman rides the leaping lion in a corporate environment. This can be seen as an image about the effort to secure new business, or attempts to hang on to a rapidly growing enterprise. The businessman has bravery and courage as well as determination and skill.

Creating this image was no small task! I rented the lion from Bow Wow productions. They brought the big fellow, Safari is his name, to my studio (at the time I had a large studio in San Francisco with a drive in door) in a trailer. We backed the trailer into the studio and let the lion out...on a leash held by one of the three trainers that came with him. There was a collective gasp from my crew as the lion exited the trailer into the studio. He was powerfully muscled and just had an air of regalness about him. No doubt that Safari was the King of not just the jungle...but where ever he happened to be!

I photographed the Lion for about 45 minutes before the handlers decided he was getting to "curious" about me...the photographer. During that time I shot as many different angles as I could...we really couldn't get him to do too much other than sit on a stand, stand up to reach for chuncks of beef heart, and roll around on the floor a bit.

I photographed the office in San Rafael as part of a stock shoot to get office backgrounds. The models were photographed for various other stock shoots. The man riding the lion I shot specifically for this shot...I had him "riding" apple boxes covered in a moving blanket. Then it was just a matter of combining all of the elements in Photoshop.

Lions are universally perceived as courageous and bold as well as dangerous and ruthless. To harness a lion as this businessman is doing shows leadership, power and strength...necessary traits of modern CEOs. The lion is leaping out into the world in what can be seen as a business effort to dominate the marketplace, secure new markets and business, and to challenge competitors. This is an image about what it takes to be successful in today's highly competitive world.
